Murder Plain and Simple An Amish Quilt Shop Mystery Isabella Alan Books

We have a new sleuth, Angela Braddock, who has inherited a Amish quilt store, Running Stitch, in Holmes County, Ohio. The town, Rolling Brook, has long been the home of Angela's Aenti (Aunt.) However, there are those in the neighborhood that are not in favor of another Englischer owning a store in the predominantly Amish Community. Specifically, woodworker, Joseph Walker. In fact he is contesting the ownership of the store. Joseph insists that he is the new owner. It all comes down to a missing deed.

Angela, herself, is a mid-thirties, single(recently un-engaged), woman raised in Texas. She has the fancy boots to prove it. Angela had visited her Aenti for many summers after her family had moved to Dallas. Coming back to Rolling Brook is a healing time she hopes.

Angela does find comfort in some of the quilting ladies that were good friends of her Aenti. The community itself is a mixture of unique and comforting personalities. There are the gossipers, the out for themselves, the friendly and the supporting. There is even a recently released person from prison. For humor there is Angela's French Bulldog, Oliver, who is an ornithophobic (fear of birds.)

The missing deed is a serious issue. It all comes to a dramatic stop when Joseph is found slain in Running Stitch's storeroom. What was he doing in the closed store? Amish men are home in their houses with their families after sundown. Angela had left at midnight...so? How did he get in? Who killed him. Clearly, Angela is at the top of the sheriff's list of suspects. Is she also at the top of his romantic interests? Angela knows she must get herself off his list quickly.

This book felt familiar and yet, had many new elements to the story plot. The humor added to the scenes with Oliver were wonderful. There are many others humorous moments with other characters.

This will be a great series to follow in the upcoming volumes. I look forward to this gentle cozy.

This is the first book in the Amish Quilt Shop Mystery series. Since I read the 4th one first I decided to go back and see how it all started. I really enjoyed it!

Angie has just inherited her aunt's quilt shop in Rolling Brook, Ohio. A small Amish town. Angie and her fiance Ryan have just broken off their wedding and Angie is in need of something to distract her wounded heart. Having visited Rolling Brook as a child Angie is ready to take up residence there and become a part of the community. Some of the Amish people are not happy about Angie taking over her aunt's shop though. Particularly her business neighbor Joseph Walker. When Joseph Walker claims to own the property that Running Stitch is a part of but no deed can be found, Angie is determined to find the deed and prove to the crusty Amish man that she has every right to run her aunt's business. Unfortunately Joseph Walker turns up murdered inside her shop. With the deed still missing and all the evidence pointing to Angie as the murderer, she sets out to clear her name. Suspects seem to be coming out of the woodwork, particularly Joseph Walker's brother-in-law Elijah Knepp. Fresh out of prison Elijah seems to be the obvious answer to who killed Joseph, but there are other suspects that had motive as well so Angie goes about town poking around and asking questions that eventually put her and her dog Ollie in danger.

Like I said, I enjoyed going back and finding out how Angie came to be in Holmes County and how she met Sheriff Mitchell. I have to admit I did suspect the person that turned out to be the murderer before the actual reveal. I just couldn't figure out exactly what that person's motive was! I enjoyed the humor in the story as well as the mystery and am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series that I missed before reading book 4! If you like cozy mysteries, series and humor then I think you will enjoy giving this series a try.
When Angela Braddock inherited her aunt's Amish quilt shop, she sees this as the perfect opportunity to get over her broken engagement and leaves her job and family behind in Texas to run Running Stitch. Angie spent many summers at the quilt shop and thought it would be relatively easy to run the shop but isn't prepared for the animosity of Amish woodworker Joseph Walker who claims to really own Running Stitch. When Joseph is murdered in Angie's shop, she believes the police will think she is the killer and sets out to clear her name. But will her efforts put both her and her beloved dog Oliver in danger?

"Murder, Plain and Simple" is the nicely done debut novel in Isabella Alan's Amish Quilt Shop cozy mystery series. I've read many books set in the Amish world, both romances and mysteries, and I like Alan's slightly different take on the Amish in this book. In other books I've read the Amish are more "saintly" counting on prayer to see them through - in this book the Amish are more "human", jealous, gossipy, greedy at times, and not afraid to go after what they want. Truthfully, this was a tad difficult for me to take at first as the actions of some of the Amish were a bit too much (for Amish and non-Amish alike) but in the end I was caught up enough in the story that it no longer bothered me. I like the character of Angela who is determined to carry on with her aunt's quilt shop but learning, even though she spent summers visiting her Amish aunt, how to navigate the sometimes tricky world between the Amish and English. I also love the chemistry between her and Sheriff Mitchell. The Amish world is well portrayed (warts and all) and the Watermelon Festival adds some nice humor to the book. The mystery is well plotted and I was surprised at who the murderer turned out to be. The ending of the book was a little sad - keep tissues nearby while reading this. Finally, there is tension between some of the characters that leads to a nice set up for the next book in the series.
