Grand Humble Brent Hartinger Books
I hardly ever review books- honestly, I read so many, they just don't stand out enough to review. Sad, but true. This book, though- the ending caught me completely by surprise. That never happens! I won't spoil anything here.
I was also really happy to read a book about teens where nobody had sex, did drugs, or got drunk (though nudity, drugs, and alcohol were mentioned in passing). If I recall correctly, there was one "F-bomb".

Grand Humble Brent Hartinger Books Reviews
One incident, two very young boys, the same age, at the scene with similar backgrounds! Both fathers are potential U.S. Senators, both mothers have a problem brother, etc. It gets better as they become teenagers! Not only do they attend the same school but both boys have a feeling or foreboding if you will, of an important event in each of their lives concerning a parent. Both boys have the same paths available to them. Are these two identical realities showing differences in the decisions we make? Five stars, a real head spinner!
I really enjoyed the pace of how the story captivated and progressed. The characters premonitions and nightmares seemed to exist in parallel lives that would eventually bring them together, thus kept me reading. Since it appeared to indicate that Manny and Harlan attended the same high school, they seemingly were unfamiliar with each other; yet, as their friends became intertwined, it seemed evident that they would ultimately meet in the midst of some form of accident. Although the entire story was really suspenseful, the ending left me lost. Who is Jerome??? Who really existed and who didn't??? Throughout the progression of the story, all progressed and melded together, but the ending made no sense, and this was within the final few pages. Again; who is Jerome??? I must admit is was after 3 a.m. when I finished reading it, yet I don't believe my confusion was the hour; it was the ending. I'd still recommend this book; perhaps someone else will be able to understand the meaning behind the ending.
This is the second book by Brent Hartinger that I have read. The first was Geography Club and I purchased it in a dusty little bookstore downtown Seattle, for my sister who has known Brent for many years. Before I gave it to her a gave it a read and really loved it. Grand and Humble, a completely different book, came to me through BookBub.com and I guess I had it waiting in my library awhile before I knew who wrote it. So, after seeing Brent's name yesterday morning, I dove right in.
What a wonderful story line! What amazingly developed characters - it's not often that you become so connected to four to six characters so quickly, but they were lovable, likable, annoying, adorable, etc just like those "characters" we remember from our own highschool days. I'm not about to spoil anything, I just had absolutely no trouble following the story when it began to twist. And even though I really want MORE, NOW! Of both Harlan and Manny I am prepared to suffer on without it. Please read Brent Hartinger's Grand and Humble. You won't be sorry!
I enjoyed this book throughout the read. Believable characters with believable problems, well described without being fussy.
Then I got to the end. And was quite literally left open-mouthed gaping for a few seconds, in mild confusion. Then I reread the last couple paragraphs to get everything sorted out in my head, and was stunned all over again. I 'closed' the book .... and immediately wanted to read it again from the beginning.
A phenomenal work from Brent Hartinger. Definitely a name I'll be watching out for from now on.
This is going to be a tough review for me. I usually just spout off and move on but I really don't like to be mean. Unfortunately, there's a fine line between that and truthful. Although, in this case, I don't think the grand and hardly humble author will be too crushed. First of all, even if the lofty, mind-blowing plot hadn't been completely nonsensical (instead of brilliant) the writing would still have turned me off. When I got to the end and saw all the author's credits I was absolutely dumbfounded. Not to mention all his self-aggrandandhumbllizing. I worked in education for years and raised a child and I never heard a teenager talk like his absurd dialog For some reason that's very common. How hard would it be to let a teenager see it for feedback? I'll probably get some crap for this review but, I'm sorry, books and authors like this are becoming the scary future of writing and it makes me heartsick for reasons that are too complicated to visit in this largely insignificant review. Younger readers than I (almost everyone) will probably be outraged--not to mention the author--but that's okay, they'll just think I'm clueless and never even know what they've missed. Oh, and seriously, "drolly"??? SMH
Brent Hartinger always puts out wonderful novels and this one is no exception!
Grand and Humble is a story that is riveting to the end, taking twists and turns as the reader struggles to figure out who these two boys are and how they are linked. The conclusion is epic and satisfying! The clues were there the whole time, and when the reader finishes, they will page back through and try to find the clues and link them together.
*I was given a free copy of Grand and Humble by the author in exchange for an honest review*
