Minder A Ganzfield Novel Kate Kaynak Books
After getting attacked one night, Maddie Dunn does the impossible. She fights back with her mind. Her life is turned upside down, told she is a "Minder", a person who possesses telepathic powers, she is transported to Ganzfield, a secret training facility with people just like her, but they're not. The majority of kids here possess pyrokinetic (fire) powers and mind control, she is the only minder. Here, she meets Trevor, a person who she instantly connects with. It could be the fact that he is also a loner at the facility. He is telekinetic, someone who can control objects with his mind. He also feels he is dangerous to be around, just like Maddie. They fall hard and fast in love as if nothing can tear them apart. But, there are some secrets bout this facility that are kept hidden and some enemies that want it destroyed.
Kate Kaynak has created an interesting world that is similar to X-men in many aspects, but also resembles an ordinary high school. There's the popular kids/bullies (mind controllers) and the lovable geeks (pyros). All characters a very well-rounded and it was good to see all the flaws and weaknesses that teenagers with such powers have.
Even though the relationship between Maddie and Trevor happens too quickly, and it felt a bit unrealistic at times, I felt they were the perfect couple. Both of them were outsiders at school. Maddie was the only Minder and Trevor was the only telekinetic, and both of them were dangerous to be around when they were asleep. It can easily be seen why both would turn to each other.
Minder is the fantastic introduction to the world of Ganzfield, and the perfect start to this series. The book was a quick read, packed full of emotion and turmoil. I look forward to picking up Adversary and the rest of the books in this series to see where Maddie and Trevor go next.

Minder A Ganzfield Novel Kate Kaynak Books Reviews
This book feels like it was written by two different authors...It starts well enough...smart, interesting...then, after about 25% of the book, it goes downhill fast...It turns into a cheesy teen soap opera. Insta-love, gushing...ridiculous. Almost like the a 13 year-old took over the writing process, and it made me mad! What the...what the?!? Skip it people!!! Hate to give bad reviews, but his one made me mad!
I'm not too big on romance novels, but I do love fantasy and science fiction. So I was excited at the description and reviews of this novel because the idea of discovering that you have the power to read people's thoughts was very interesting.
Maddie has a very terrifying experience and ends up going to a top secret school for young people who have special powers like hers. Some of them can manipulate fire, some can move things with their minds, and some can influence the emotions of others and make them do things they might not want to do.
When Mandy meets Trevor they fall in love and become soul-mates, which has special meaning because they could share thoughts on the deepest level.
It seemed to me that the novel got stuck there, and 3/4 of the book was spent with the couple gazing into each other's eyes. I wanted more action and less gazing.
This book could have been great. Unfortunately 3/4 of the story was a love at first sight romance. All about how much they love each other, how perfect they are, etc etc etc. It got very dull. Even the action scenes were dulled because of the focus on romance. I really don't want to spend most of a book reading about two teenagers who keep almost ending up in bed together. I read a lot of YA, and don't mind a romance plot in a book, but not if that's all it is. This was a romance with some X-man window dressing.
There was surprisingly more romance than I expected but it overall very intriguing and I enjoyed it very much.
Characters Maddie is a great main character, she is a fighter, very determined and strong willed person. Trevor is more shy but more out of his nervousness of what he feels for Maddie. The connection that they have is a little intimidating to both of them, but Maddie really shows the stronger side of the relationship.
Story The world that they live in is kind of a scary one. Maddie has the ability to kill people with her mind. She panics and does not know who to turn to, eventually ending up at Ganzfield where there are others there that can also mind-read as well as other powers. She meets and falls in love with Trevor. In a place where you cannot keep secrets from anybody, they end up falling deeply in love with each other. In a world full of danger their bond maybe the only thing that can save them.
Originality The idea of teens going to a special school to develop their powers and learn to use them is not a new idea. The "school" however in this book is a lot more relaxed and unlike any school that I have seen so far. It's more like a group home or camp for kids with special talents. The teachers are more laid back, the school is more like a mansion-house and they are very lenient on the rules.
Writing The story is written more like a romance than a paranormal. Although the characters communicate mostly through their thoughts and dialogue is internal, it was written in a way that was so easy to follow and had a great flow to it. There is always an overlaying sense of danger beginning with the main character panicking in the first chapter because she has killed some boys with her mind, in self defense. The danger comes back into play later in the story and leads up to a great action packed finale.
Krista's Review After reading the first couple of chapters in which I was pulled in by the very dangerous aspect of her uncontrollable murdering mind powers, the story quickly turned into a romance, and the romance aspect overtook the rest of the novel. They fall in love rather quickly, but as they could not keep any secrets from each other, it's put together well and I have to say it's one of the romantic books that I would actually recommend to friends. As a person that is not a big romance reader, I liked Maddie's determination and devotion to Trevor.
