A people’s point of view on the French Revolution, by a famous French poet.
Translated, annotated and illustrated by Jude Kahn
In this book, Leconte de Lisle, poet of beauty and leader of the Parnassian school, takes his place as a poet engaged. He paints a picture in broad strokes of the French Revolution, the popular view.
He began this work with the coming to power of Louis XVI, and takes us to no good, until Bonaparte, who is not yet Napoleon, take the history of France's account.
It is seen through these lines that Leconte de Lisle is a hard Republican; that while recognizing the wrongs of Robespierre and the Jacobins, these do not overwhelm him either.
This book describes honestly the ins and outs of this game of power, movement, chance occurrences, twists, tangles, double games, crossings, real inequities and genuine thirst for equality that was the French Revolution.
The volume was first published in 1871, the year of the Commune de Paris.
Leconte de Lisle may have written this book in order to commemorate the ‘89 Revolution in the Parisians’ hearts.
For History lovers, this book will shine a new light on those events, important in world history.

While the book was written by an eyewitness, there are few details so unless you had some familiarity with the events of French Revolution this book might seem more of an outline than a complete narrative. A more complete account of the French Revolution would be "A Chronicle of the French Revolution" by historian Simon Schama.Product details
