Super fun read! I personally enjoyed seeing the Scots dialect, especially when the person's emotions effected their accent, because that totally happens in real life. Even when it got pretty thick, everything seemed clear from context, and I knew most of the Scots words anyway, from movies and TV shows. The quirky personalities and fast paced story pulled me right through; plus it's not a billion pages long. So that "sigh, I'm about to commit to a huge book" moment isn't standing in your way. Amy Hoff includes such a great variety of characters- the ancient elf in a track suit, the surprising all-American mechanic, the time traveling highlander, and your every day Leah Bishop- you never stop to get bored. :-) Beginning with a relatable human, then ending with a cup of tea and a bang, Caledonia was a great time! Looking forward to the next one, and I'm sure I'll be re-reading this one as I wait!

...I’m totally biased about this book because I was born and bred in Glasgow, where the story is set... notwithstanding that, readers with no knowledge of the city or its tough reputation will appreciate the gritty characterisation of the setting as much the players in the narrative... it is superbly imaginative and clever of the author to wrap the present-day human heroine, Leah Bishop into scenarios with Selkies, the Faer Folk and a modern vampira... all done with admirable credibility... murders of the Faer by one of their own kind is uncommon, and Bishop’s travails and eventual solving of the crimes is superbly handled... the colour and delicacy of the unconscionably beautiful male Selkies is a constant delight as the chapters unfold... regardless of whatever genre is your usual... this tale will tempt you all the way through.... most enjoyable...
Splendid Reading. The more you get into it the harder it gets to put down. I would recommend this book to anyone that enjoys folklore. I choose this rating because it was easy and a joy to read!!
David R Stromsness.
The overall plot is good, but it the grammar isn't the greatest for publication. Too short. And Dylan's accent is more annoying than comedic. There's a reason this book is cheap. But if more are made, I'll still probably read them.
It took a bit for me to get into the narrative style, but once I got used to it, I thought it was beautifully suited for the story. I loved the interactions that Leah had with everyone at Caledonia Interpol, and I really want to read more in this universe now.
This was a really fun, quick read. Good character progression with a nice twist at the end. Would read more if it becomes a series!
Just finished reading Caledonia and what I am most struck by is how steeped the story is in texture. The environments are clearly voiced by an author who has walked the same roads painted into the story telling and it is a tactile experience. The depth and intriguing plot development wrapped around her knowledge of folklore keeps me wanting to know more and more about this world that I knew nothing about. Tying that old world into a modern day crime/mystery drama is a lot of fun and we get to experience it along with the main character, Leah, as she blends her human experience as a police officer and a person with a painful past with her self described usually impractical knowledge of Scottish Folklore. All of the characters are richly inked into the page and even the supporting characters have a lot of depth and their stories often bend into wildly unexpected twists and turns. I highly recommend giving this a read and I hope for more in this series and from this author in the future.
A potential series with room to grow. While the book was choppy enough that I nearly walked away, it definitely improved with more pages.
I enjoy the premise a good deal and I like the characters. These monsters are more than human enough for my empathy to toe the line.
Other than a character suddenly appearing through the walls of time who sent me scurrying back through the chapter as his appearance confused me, I have only one other complaint, the slang. Some sentences were lost on this American brain, when I could find no definitions in either Wikipedia nor the Oxford English Dictionary. If you are going to use regional/local slang include an appendix please.
I look forward to examining the next Leah Bishop tale.
