World Book Day was organized by UNESCO and first celebrated in the United Kingdom in 1998. Since 2007 the event has been celebrated each year with the publication of 10 specially produced books. Each school age child in the Kingdom is given a token good for purchase of any one book. In 2018 over 15 million tokens were distributed. Many of the books are contributed by well known authors, and they often take the form of one-off novellas that spring from otherwise established series. That's what this is, (from 2012).There are now ten Skulduggery Pleasant books, with more promised. This novella is set in the timeline between books six and seven. It refers to characters and events from the series, but is not part of the series. It features Valkyrie and Skullduggery, but in a purely stand alone story arc.
The novelty here is that the story is told more or less from the point of view of Ryan, the fifteen year old about whom the story revolves. Not to give too much away, but Ryan has something the eeevil villains want, and Skulduggery and Valkyrie are resolved to protect Ryan and foil the bad guys. The tale is pretty twisty for being so short.
The book has all of the snappy patter, deadpan Skulduggery, sassy/sulky Valkyrie, and understated humorous narration that fans have come to know and love during the course of reading the Skulduggery series. Witty throwaway lines, clever plot twists, and of course a planet destroying doomsday machine round out the tale. (As a special treat the endpapers include deleted scenes from the first Skulduggery book, and they show that the Valkyrie character could have gone in a much different direction had they been retained.)
This isn't terribly intense and it doesn't advance any arc or sub plot from the series, or offer any character development. But, it is a wonderful introduction to the characters and a great sort of Skulduggery sampler or taster for those unfamiliar with the series. For those impatient for the next book it serves as a tempting treat to quiet the appetite for a few more months. And it will fit in your pocket.

"Skulduggery Pleasant The End of the World" is a 15,000 word novelette/novella written especially for the 2012 World Book Day event. As such, it's not a full novel, or a part of the overall series arc, nor does it pretend to be either. It's more comparable to the extra short stories that have appeared in the mass market paperback editions of the first five novels in the series.
There are several reasons why short stories set in the Skulduggery Pleasant universe are not, for me anyway, quite as satisfying as the novels - I like the jokes and the magic and all that, but what makes me a fan of the series is the overall series arc and the character development, and the short stories are naturally limited as far as both of those things go.
So if you approach "The End of the World" with high expectations, expecting it to follow on from the events of "Death Bringer", without keeping in mind the natural limitations of the shorter format, you might well end up being a bit disappointed. On the other hand, if you approach it as just an extra story set in the familiar universe, it's much more likely to deliver a satisfying experience. It's a *fun* story. Not deep, nothing to do with the series arc, and while it obviously takes place after "Death Bringer", it's very clearly designed to be read by anyone, including people with no prior familiarity with the series (being part of the World Book Day selection, it's quite likely that it will be picked up by people who haven't read the series).
It's exactly as an introduction to the series that I think it works best. We get the story from the point of view of 15-year-old Ryan, a brand new character, who knows nothing about magic or Valkyrie or Skulduggery, so the readers get introduced to those concepts and characters via his eyes. There is the trademark series humour, there is fighting, there is magic - if the new reader likes this book, he or she will likely enjoy the series. (And vice versa; although the series itself is much deeper, much more multi-layered, much more fascinating and with characters who are really much more rounded and interesting than a short story can show, if the humour and general feeling isn't appealing, then the series probably wouldn't work well either.)
All in all, I was happy with it and enjoyed "The End of the World" very much. Is it as good as the novels? No. Is it my favourite of the extra short stories? I'm not sure it's even that. But it was a fun little story set in a universe I love, and I appreciated the chance of getting a glimpse of Skulduggery and Valkyrie going about their daily business, and having a an extra little adventure to tide me over until the release of the seventh book.
Though I can't speak for this book personally, I have been assured that my 10-year-old nephew, who keeps up with this series, loved this book, and he is an avid reader who follows many different authors and styles. This series in particular is a favorite of his, and he started it out by having checked out a collection of recorded CDs of it out of the local library, so if people are trying to get young students interested in reading, there's that option as well, if regularly carries the CDs to it. The book constructs a whole world, and young readers don't mind, apparently, reading the story for themselves after already having heard the tape, just as adults would go back and forth between a movie and a book to see which they prefer. For myself, I can report that I was able to tolerate the fantasy-style fiction set in the contemporary world which this series contains, on the occasions when my nephew insisted on playing the CDs and reading aloud from the book. That is not always the case with youth fiction, which sometimes can be too cutesy even for the youngsters to enjoy. But this series is one of his favorites. 'Nuff said.
