I really enjoyed the Invasion: America series from Mr. Heppner. The books had a lot of the building suspense I enjoyed from Red Storm Rising. As the series went on, characters matured and were given more depth as readers learned more about them. I was quite pleased that the larger world got fleshed out as we proceeded forward through these books and we learned about what was going on outside the US and China.

The author did a great job of wrapping things up with two epilogues, letting us know what became of the characters about whom some of us had gone through the effort of reading several thousand pages. Further, I think Mr. Heppner did an excellent job of imagining some of the future technologies we will see in warfighting and weapons technology. As somebody who has been involved in the defense industry in the past, I could see some of the forward thinking (and dreaming) of what technology may look like in the 2030s and 2040s.

While I say this was an ending, I would welcome the author putting together a volume in the series (or extension of the series) about the peace the followed. Specifically, this could concentrate on the political issues a dictatorship would drive at home, our future foreign engagement abroad, and how the world would look given a massive world war with the use of nuclear weapons. I would also like to see more on what happened in Europe--the Germans were dominant and then just sort of ran out of breath in this book. I just need some more of all of the above.

I would gladly recommend the book and the series as a whole and think it would make a good candidate for bundling into an omnibus version.

Invasion China Invasion America Book 5 eBook Vaughn Heppner Reviews

An alternate history about combined Chinese/Asian and South American attempt to capture US oil to force grain sales, and then to capture part or all of the US to get their croplands, complicated by an attempt by Germany/Europe to take over Canada and the eastern US. The characters are mostly so flawed and emotional as to be irritating and uninteresting. It needs a strong edit (among other things he repeats stuff unnecessarily from chapter to chapter). NOTE lots of his other stuff on seems in severe need of editing and better characters as well; he appears to pump this stuff out rather than write it. It is worth a read as long as the price of the book isn't beyond your "marginal utility."
The reason I gave this book five stars is because it accomplished what few others have done It kept me interested from start to finish and without having to skip pages of uninteresting and unnecessary detail. In fact, I did not skip any page in this one.

The characters were easy to keep track of throughout. There were not a lot of minor characters that showed up, never to be seen again as happens in many of the books I have read.

The author also did a good job of setting up a picture of the broad scheme of things. I am referring here to the geopolitical alliances that were at the center of the book. Sure, some of his story was a bit hard for me to envision, but who knows what the world will be like in the future.

There were very few editing errors. Not many at all. So no distractions there.
Vaughn Heppner's latest entry in his Invasion America series takes up where he left off. The Germans have been defeated on the Canadian front and only the Chinese still occupying the American Southwest remain to be dealt with. For me, the most interesting element here is the use of Militia forces as supplements to regular army units. In Heppner's imagined universe, the Militia corresponds roughly to Hitler's SA (the Brownshirts), not the Waffen SS. Far from being elite troops, the Militia are a sort of mass movement providing cannon fodder to the US armies, desperately needed in a World War instigated by China. Their political prominence and the corresponding lawlessness they bring to the US serves as a fascinating examination of what happens when you surrender your liberty in a vain hope of increased security. This volume seems to bring closure to the series but really should be read after the earlier volumes to best be appreciated.
I love this author and love what he writes. This is one of those books that I find pretty telling and maybe a bit prophetic. The whole series is about an America that is no longer a superpower. China calls in its debt, that is surely coming, and invades as a new ice age makes the world hunger. Essentially this is pretty much the way Revelation lays things out in the Bible and is likely where Mr. Heppner got the inspiration for the books. One of the things I most like about Heppner is his willingness to honor the Creator and also his lack of foul words. I hope lots of folks read this one and find it compelling enough to read their Bibles and come to the Lord.
First of all I must apologize to the author for not reviewing this book or the rest in the series which I've finally finished. My wife spent 10 days in the hospital in June and since then I've been tied up most of the time taking care of her and doing all the other housework.

My review of the Invasion series

I really thought the whole series deserves 5 stars. It was a very well thought out and written book. The whole speculative idea of China attacking the US could be a possibility in the future, the Germans I wouldn't be too sure of though. Some of the weapons used could become a possibility in the time frame the book was written in especially the German robotics. I could go on but I don't want to add any spoilers to the review.

Mr Heppner definitely has a winner in this series and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. I'd recommend the series to anyone who likes High-Tec, Military Science Fiction taking place in the near future.
